Ad-blocking is a known issue for the advertising and publishing industry worldwide, but what about South Africa? We look at the most recent numbers on ad blocking for the country.

Google announced earlier this year that they plan to implement ad-blocking settings for both mobile and desktop versions of its Chrome browser. Any websites that fail to adhere to Chromes guidelines will be blocked, including ads owned or served by Google. This forewarning is to alert websites to assess their ads and subsequently get rid of any ads that don’t follow the guidelines from their pages. But don’t worry you still have time, as Google only intendeds to implement ad blockers early next year.

Effective Measure recently put together an infographic of ad blocking trends in South Africa. While a staggering 46% of South Africans don’t know what an ad blocker currently is, Google is definitely heading in the right direction to protect users from “annoying” adverts.

The big question on everyone’s mind is, what will the implications be for business?
